Kendrick Lamar’s latest album, DAMN, has been one of the most dissected & listened to albums of this past year or even decade for that matter. Since its inception, there have been plenty of fan theories about the project, including one that K. Dot had plans to release a second album, & another that the album could be listened to entirely backwards, but it turns out the latter is indeed true now. In a new interview with MTV, K. Dot confirmed that he purposely made the album to be consumed backwards.

“I think like a week after the album came out, [fans] realized you can play the album backwards,” he said. “It plays as a full story and even a better rhythm… It’s something that we definitely premeditate while we’re in the studio.”

While some fans believe playing the album backwards changes the story, K. Dot doesn’t buy that, but instead said the backwards play gives it a new feel.

“I don’t think the story necessarily changes, I think the feel changes,” K. Dot explained. “The initial vibe listening from the top all the way to the bottom is…this aggression and this attitude. You know, ‘DNA,’ and exposing who I really am. You listen from the back end, and it’s almost the duality and the contrast of the intricate Kendrick Lamar. Both of these pieces are who I am.” So there you have it, from the mouth of K. Dot himself, Damn could be played in its original order or backwards.
