Calvin Harris released his latest album Funk WAV Bounces Vol. 1 earlier this summer and it was a departure from his previous work, but not in an unwelcome way. The producer typically projects more of an EDM onto his music, with examples being tracks like “We Found Love” and “Sweet Nothing,” but on this summer’s LP, he took a different approach, trading in hard-charging club beats for some more laid-back, beachside grooves. Like DJ Khaled’s album Grateful, Harris also managed to procure a glut of A-list music stars to join in on the fun, with numbers like “Slide” and “Rollin’” featuring the likes of Future, Frank Ocean, Migos and more. Now, the Scottish-born sensation has a new video out for his song “Feels,” bringing the proceedings onto a neon-lit stage for a large dose of retro-flavored vibes.
Setting themselves up to look like a 1960’s folk rock group that passed through a diamond-filled car wash, we see the main players on the track do what they do best. Katy Perry writhes and coos as she’s known to do, sporting an outfit that boasts no small amount of fringe. Pharrell Williams, looking suitably glitzy in a bedazzled jacket, occupies himself with the keyboard chords and exudes a quietly confident kind of cool throughout the video. Big Sean looks like the only one who’s kind of out of place, relegated to sitting on some sound gear at the back of the stage area, waiting patiently for his verse to come up. Once it does though, he’s ready to snap up the microphone and spit his bars. Harris plays the part of the bassist rather stoically, not really hogging any camera time from any of his co-stars and content to let them be the focus of the show. With a shimmering neon background, it’s a colorful interpretation of one of the summer’s funkiest tunes.
